Newcastle Building Society are at the heart of the communities they serve in the North East. Following on from a photo/audio series Voice Of Yarm around the opening of a branch on Yarm High Street, they asked us for ideas on how to bring a similar story to life around their relocation of the Darlington branch. The theme for them was Darlington Journeys, the journey through time, of place and of people.
Newcastle Building Society put out a call for people with a story to tell about their connection to Darlington, receiving some very interesting responses. We spent a couple of days in Darlington hearing these fascinating stories and linking those people with their places. One of the biggest surprises was seeing the construction of a new Locomotive in Darlington, part of the birthplace of the railways. We had a wonderful range of locations around Darlington, including the Victorian Market, peaceful bowls club and a sneak peak at the refurbishment of the Civic Theatre – now renamed the Hippodrome.
We had so much amazing content to work with. Carving it down to a few minutes was always going to be a challenge so seeing the threads of everyone’s stories weave together through the cut made it a fascinating process. This was definitely a film where we needed to let the content breathe to allow people to tell their story. Visually, it was a fantastic moment when the grade was applied to the images, really bringing the film to life and adding a real texture to them.
The film went down a storm with Newcastle Building Society, nailing the brief and really fitting with their community focus. It was used at a special event at the freshly refurbished Darlington branch as well as their online channels. It looks amazing on their huge instore screen as a constant reminder of People & Place – what a fantastic project to be involved with.
